By Dakshesh Pathak
— The first seven batsmen of Indian team, played against West Indies at Ferozshah Kotla in the first test of 2011 series, have accumulated 52049 runs in total number of 689 test matches among them, with 140 centuries and 251 half centuries.

No team ever in the history of cricket had this distinction of such awesome and envious record. Not even Ricky Ponting’s ‘virtually unbeatable side from 2003 to 2007′ team could match this record. The likes of Matthew Hayden, Justin Langer, Ricky Punting, Damien Martin, Michael Clarke, Andrew Symonds and Adam ‘Gilly’ couldn’t match this record that Indian team holds today. Even Clive Lloyd’s one of the greatest eleven of cricket history from 1980 to 1985, didn’t have this distinction of its first seven batsmen scoring more than 50000 runs among them.

It was one of the strongest batting line up with Gorden Greenidge, ‘Hammer’ Desmond Haynes, Sir Vivian Richards, Clive Lloyd, Alvin Kalicharan ( Later on, larry Gomes took his place ), Gus Logie, Jeff Dujon which ripped apart every bowling attack of every team from 1983 to 1985, but still, today’s Indian batting line up surges ahead in terms of total number of runs scored by first 7 batsmen.

—Another interesting fact about this Indian batting line up is, two batsmen with 10,000 plus runs are playing together in a single team, who also accumulate 86 centuries between them. Sachin Tendulkar with 14965 runs and 51 centuries and Rahul dravid with 12775 runs with 35 centuries. Sachin has scored 61 half centuries and Dravid has scored 60 half centuries. So, if we count both, it reaches to 27740 runs, 86 centuries, 121 half centuries in 338 test matches between them ( Sachin 181 and Dravid 157 ). Also, for the first time in the history of cricket, two batsmen with more than 150 test matches are playing together in a single team.

—The first seven batsmen in today’s team, considered for this record are as under.

— Virender Sehwag — 87 tests, 7694 runs, 22 centuries, 27 half centuries
— Gautam gambhir — 41 tests, 3336 runs, 9 centuries, 16 half centuries
— Rahul Dravid — 157 tests, 12775 runs, 35 centuries, 60 half centuries
— Sachin Tendulkar — 181 tests, 14965 runs, 51 centuries, 61 half centuries
— vvs Lakshman — 127 tests, 8328 runs, 16 centuries, 54 half centuries
— Yuvraj Singh — 35 tests, 1709 runs, 03 centuries, 10 half centuries
— M.S.Dhoni — 61 tests, 3242 runs, 04 centuries, 23 half centuries.

Total : 689 tests, 52049 runs, 140 centuries, 251 half centuries among first 7 batsmen of Indian cricket team which played against West Indies on 6th November 2011.
(The records stated here are till the last test match against England in September 2011, before the start of current test series against West Indies)

If we add oneday records of these Indian players, who toured England recently, it is even more awesome. Though sachin Tendulkar didn’t play the one day series in England and Yuvraj and Viru were injured and Dravid played in his last one day series there and if we count all these players in one team, which they played in one team at one point, it goes like this.

— Total number of Oneday matches played by these Indian batsmen — 1774
( Sehwag 235, Gambhir 119, Dravid 344, Sachin 453, lakshman 86, Yuvraj 274, Dhoni 196, Kohli 67 )

– Total number of runs scored among these players –60463
( Sehwag- 7760, Gambhir- 4286, Dravid- 10889, Tendulkar- 18111, Lakshman- 2338, Yuvraj- 8051, Dhoni- 6497, Kohli- 2531 )

– Centuries– 116 ( Sehwag- 14, Gambhir- 09, Dravid- 12, Tendulkar- 48, Lakshman- 06, Yuvraj- 13, Dhoni-07, Kohli- 07 )

– Half centuries–360 ( Sehwag-37, Gambhir-27, Dravid- 83, Tendulkar- 95, Lakshman- 10, Yuvraj- 49, Dhoni- 43, Kohli- 16 )

If we club both test and one day records of first seven batsmen (the seventh batsman in this team has been picked up alternatively between Yuvraj, Kohli and Lakshman at different time phase), it reaches to really awesomeeee——-

– It goes like this……….

   —- 2466 matches, 1,12588 runs, 256 centuries and 611 half centuries……

Could any team match this even in slightest possibility?
Well, had there been no second world war, had test matches been played between these years, had oneday matches been introduced at that time itself and had everyone from Sir Don Bradman’s ‘The Invincibles’ fit from 1938 to 1947, with Sir Don and Bill Ponsford taking the charge with strong support from Sidney Barnes, Arthur Morris, Lindsay Hassett and Keith Miller and Ray Lindwall as batting all-rounders like they did many often, had there been no Kerry Packer and had Clive Lloyd’s team not spent 3 years with his unofficial matches from 1977 to 1979 in the prime time of Sir Viv Richards, Greenidge, Haynes, Lloyd himself, Frederics Collis King and Derrick Murray, had all the great batsmen of Ricky Ponting’s team played in a single eleven for longer time with no pre-mature or early retirement by Damien Martin and others……….the possibility would have been there….but this Indian team has shown greater figures than ‘ifs and buts…..’ a very awesome record…which seems to be literally difficult for any future team to surpass…

The Mumbai Police today arrested a city-based senior woman journalist, Jigna Vora, in connection with the murder of senior investigative journalist Jyotirmoy Dey.

“Jigna Vora, deputy bureau chief of English daily Asian Age, has been arrested today as she played a role in the conspiracy hatched to murder J Dey,” Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Himanshu Roy said.

Vora was allegedly in touch with fugitive gangster Chhota Rajan, an accused in the case, and gave him the registration number of Dey’s bike along with his office and residence addresses. This information was suspected to have been used by the alleged killers to survey and lay the groundwork for the murder, the crime branch has alleged.

Vora, who was questioned by the crime branch in connection with the case several times, will be produced before a Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court later in the day.

Ten people, including Rohee Thangappan Joseph alias Satish Kalya and his associates Abhijeet Shinde, Arun Dake, Sachin Gaikwad, Anil Waghmode, Nilesh Shendge, Mangesh Agawane, Vinod Asrani, Paulson Joseph and Deepak Sisodia, all members of the Rajan gang, have so far been arrested in connection with the case.

The special MCOCA court, on November 5, had granted a 30-day extension to the Mumbai Crime Branch to file chargesheet in the murder of Dey. The Crime Branch was seeking an extension on grounds that it had to investigate the role of Vora.

Dey, 56, was shot dead by motorcycle-borne killers in broad daylight in Mumbai’s central suburb of Powai on June 11.

INSIDER VIEW:Strange that Chhota Rajan, known for tracking down people to extort money, had to take help from a journalist for petty information like bike registration number, residence address and above all office address of Mid Day. If this really has happened, then gangsters are losing their information technique and if it hasnt, it is miscarriage of justice.

Australian TV Production Company CORDELL JIGSAW (www.cordelljigsaw.com) is looking to engage experienced current affairs fixers / local journalists in Delhi, Mumbai and major cities in the Punjab to help cast an Australian TV series examining Indian attitudes towards Australia.

We are looking to cast opinionated, outspoken and/or politically savvy individuals, media professionals or other Indians with interesting experience of dealing with Australians (and have a wholly unfavourable opinion of those Aussies).

Maybe they have spoken out against Australia and its policies in the past. Maybe they have reported on bad Australian behaviour. Maybe their opinions on Australians were shaped by the student attacks in Melbourne and the lack of action in Australia (true or perceived) and they feel that Australia is ultimately inherently a racist country.

We need vocal Indians with negative opinions and views of Australia, and/or the Australian Government, who are willing to spend a month investigating those preconceptions and re-examining their views on a road-trip across Australia during late December and January.

Please contact Jen Peart at peartjen@gmail.com for more information if you think you can help us find the right people for the series or are interested in taking part
yourself.

Unless you’re wholly entrenched in the daily goings on of Internet and copyright law, SOPA might be one of those things you hadn’t even heard of until this morning, when sites like BoingBoing and Tumblr and GigaOm launched posts explaining and condemning it. SOPA is the Stop Online Piracy Act, a bill introduced into the House that, according to a New York Times OpEd, “would empower the attorney general to create a blacklist of sites to be blocked by Internet service providers, search engines, payment providers and advertising networks, all without a court hearing or a trial. [SOPA] goes further, allowing private companies to sue service providers for even briefly and unknowingly hosting content that infringes on copyright.”

Sounds pretty scary, right? The SOPA hearings started in the House today, and that’s why today has been declared American Censorship Day. Numerous companies and websites are attempting to raise awareness about SOPA in an attempt to “save the Internet” and hopefully block the passage of the law. But so far, according to Techdirt, the odds are stacked 5 to 1 in favor of passing the bill.

SOPA has many implications for casual Internet users, but for journalists the repercussions of SOPA passing could be immense. Here are a few ways in which the passage of SOPA could impact journalists and their organizations.

1. Your Articles Could Be Censored

Say you’re writing an article, and one of the websites or quotes that you want to reference comes from a site that has been accused of piracy. Even if your piece does not include anything that could be considered copyright infringing, if it links to a source that does–a source as innocuous as a YouTube video or a Tumblr post–your entire article could be blocked from the Internet in the US. According to Fight for the Future, “This law would give government and corporations the power to block sites like BoingBoing over infringing links on at least one webpage posted by their users.”

2. Multimedia and Citizen Journalism Would Suffer

Want to upload a video from the Occupy Wall Street protests to YouTube? Or maybe upload an audio interview to Soundcloud? If SOPA passes, these sites would be entirely responsible for the actions of their users. That means that if just one user posts content deemed illegal by SOPA, the entire website could be blocked. Platforms that are integral to both citizen journalism and successful multimedia journalism could effectively cease to exist. As Rebecca MacKinnon writes in the New York Times, SOPA ”would also emulate China’s system of corporate “self-discipline,” making companies liable for users’ actions. The burden would be on the Web site operator to prove that the site was not being used for copyright infringement. The effect on user-generated sites like YouTube would be chilling.”

3. Innovation Would Be Stifled

One of the most exciting things about being a journalist in this day and age is that we have constant access to amazing digital tools that can help us tell better stories. Projects like Guardian Beta frequently test startups to see which ones work and don’t work, and attempt to figure out how they can incorporate emerging technologies into their websites. If SOPA passes, the legal risks of starting an online venture would greatly increase, de-incentivizing innovation and creativity. ReadWriteWeb has a great infographic from AmericanCensorship.org that explains, “As a result [of SOPA], sites’ self-censorship increases dramatically. Fewer startups launch, due to riskier legal climate.”

SOPA’s implications are wide-ranging, and if passed, could impact everyone from casual Internet users to news organizations. What do you think of the Stop Online Piracy Act?

The Vice President of India, Shri M. Hamid Ansari has said that the convergence between news media, entertainment and telecom has meant that the demarcation between journalism, public relations, advertising and entertainment has been eroded. Delivering inaugural address at the “ National Press Day Celebration” organized by the Press Council of India, here today, he has expressed his concern that the new trends in technological development and media conglomeration characterized by an emphasis on commercial values and outcomes, pose challenges to traditional public service values in news broadcasting.
Shri Ansari has opined that Media outlets today assume importance not only for marketing and advertisement but also for the ‘soft power’ aspects of businesses, organisations and even nations. It is a harsh reality that media entrepreneurship is now a necessary condition for a business enterprise, a political party and even individuals seeking to leverage public influence for private gain.

The Vice President has said that in our country today, media represents a sector of economy that is the envy of others because of the extremely buoyant growth rates witnessed over the last two decades, in an environment characterised by minimal or no regulation. In the absence of any other government regulator, the focus has shifted to self-regulation by the media organisations, individually or collectively. Collective self-regulation however has yet to succeed in substantive measure because it is neither universal nor enforceable. Individual self-regulation has also failed due to personal predilection and the prevailing of personal interest over public interest.

Shri Ansari has said that our democracy is poorer without active media watch groups engaged in objective analyses of the media, discerning prejudices and latent biases, and subjecting the media to a dose of their own medicine. For an industry that has over fifty thousand newspapers and hundreds of television channels, systematic media criticism is non-existent in India. This should be remedied and I hope your deliberations would address this important aspect.

He has remarked that a related matter pertains to the recent controversy over ‘paid news’. It has been debated extensively in the Press Council and other fora, including Parliament. It is a matter of some satisfaction that the ‘culture of silence’ on the subject is being replaced with an attempt to grapple with this malaise at multiple levels.

He has called upon all stakeholders – the government, the media organisations and the industry, civil society, advertisers and sponsors, and the audience and readership of the media to address the various concerns regarding the profession and work towards securing and defending the public good.

Following is the text of the Vice President’s inaugural address:-
“It gives me great pleasure to inaugurate the National Press Day. I congratulate The Press Council of India, its Chairman and Members, on this occasion.

In over 45 years of its existence, the Council has fulfilled to a significant extent its mandate, as a quasi judicial body, of preserving the freedom of the press and of maintaining and improving the standards of press in India, and adjudicating complaints.

Ours is an age of great change – social, economic, political and above all technological. Each has impacted on our individual and collective thought processes. Major premises are being revisited and the certitudes of an earlier era called into question. The answers are often disconcerting, in many cases tentative.

The theme of today’s celebration is Media as an instrument of public accountability. A useful starting point of discussion would be to enquire into the basic premise of being a democracy.

An essential feature of democracy is constraint on unlimited exercise of power. Democratic practice seeks to bring about accountability of actions of institutions and individuals in an objective, verifiable and transparent manner. While common understanding of constrains on power is limited to exercise of ‘public power’ by state actors, it is important to remember that it also extends to ‘private power’, of non-public authorities, especially when such entities acquire or exercise power traditionally associated with state structures.

It is a truism that humans are social creatures who formulate rules of interaction aimed at furtherance of harmony and common good and avoidance of anarchy. Rules and rule-based regulations are thus essential and unavoidable, more so in a democracy that eschews arbitrary exercise of power.

Another truism is that some form of media has been integral to human civilization since time immemorial. Its principal purpose, to inform, remains unchanged. Technological innovations like the invention of paper and the printing press, radio transmission, TV broadcasting, and the World Wide Web have spawned new media platforms and devices for consumption.
Today, the convergence between news media, entertainment and telecom has meant that the demarcation between journalism, public relations, advertising and entertainment has been eroded.
The new trends in technological development and media conglomeration characterized by an emphasis on commercial values and outcomes, pose challenges to traditional public service values in news broadcasting.

How do they impact the lofty ideal of journalism – of communicating reliable, accurate facts in a meaningful context?

This aspect is of relevance because the media is the fourth estate in a democracy. It plays a major role in informing the public and thereby shape perceptions and through it the national agenda. Its centrality is enhanced manifold by increased literacy levels and by the technological revolution of the last two decades and its impact on the generation, processing, dissemination and consumption of news.

Media outlets today assume importance not only for marketing and advertisement but also for the ‘soft power’ aspects of businesses, organisations and even nations. It is a harsh reality that media entrepreneurship is now a necessary condition for a business enterprise, a political party and even individuals seeking to leverage public influence for private gain.

It would be instructive to study how other democratic systems have dealt with the media revolution and the convergence of communication technologies. Three stable democracies, namely the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia can be studied for best practices.

In December 2000 the United Kingdom published a White Paper entitled A New Future for Communications in Britain. It suggested conceptual restructuring to bring together the five sectors of telecommunications, television, radio, broadcasting standards and radio spectrum allocations under a single-umbrella communications regulator. In addition, it proposed covering access, choice, content and competition.

The White Paper proposed a new three-tiered regulation of broadcasting so as to provide a level playing field between the broadcasters, depending on the extent of their public service role. It stressed that all broadcasters be subject to minimum standards, impartiality in news, provision of protection of minors and access of people with disabilities.

Emanating from this, The Communications Act 2003 established the Office of Communications (OFCOM) as the regulator for all communications industries to further the interests of citizens and consumers. It was tasked with ensuring optimal use of electro-magnetic spectrum, availability of electronic communication services, a wide range of TV and Radio services of high quality, maintaining plurality in broadcasting, applying adequate protection for audiences against offensive or harmful material, and against unfairness or infringement of privacy.

The British experience of transition from a multi regulator to a single umbrella regulator, accountable to Parliament, and covering telecommunications, broadcast media and wireless spectrum, indicates that turf battles between economic sectors, government departments and individual companies have to be carefully managed in the midst of building a national consensus and enacting legislation.

The experience of the United States and its Federal Communication Commission in regulating communications by Radio, Television, Wire, Satellite and Cable for over 75 years is also instructive. It promotes competition, innovation and investment in communications, encourages the best use of spectrum and revises media regulations so that new technologies can flourish alongside diversity and localism.

American law imposes limitations on multiple ownerships and cross-ownership of media establishments across radio, television and print media to prevent emergence of monopolies and to ensure adequacy of independent media voices in the market that could serve public interests, localization of news and bring about diversity.

In the case of Australia, it is The Australian Communications and Media Authority which is responsible for the regulation of broadcasting, the internet, radio communications and telecommunications sectors. In its role as a broadcast regulator, the ACMA plans the channels that radio and television services use, issues and renews licenses, regulates the content of radio and television services, including digital services, and administers the ownership and control rules for broadcasting services.

The regulator enforces statutory control rules based on license area and audience reach, limitations on multiple and cross-ownership, limits on foreign control of the mass media, regulations on transfer of media operations and media groups, and determines acceptability or otherwise of media diversity. It seeks to bring about programme diversity, help foster a national cultural identity, bring about fair reporting of news and ensure respect for community standards.

While media outlets in Australia have the main responsibility for ensuring that the broadcast content reflects community standards, most aspects of such content are governed by codes of practice developed by industry groups. The regulator registers these codes once it is satisfied that the codes contain appropriate community safeguards and are a product of public consultation. National content and children’s programmes on commercial television are regulated by compulsory programme standards determined by the regulator after consultation with the industry and the general public.

You would notice that the experience and practice of other democracies indicates that media licensing and regulation is seen as a normal and essential activity to help its functioning as the watchdog of public interest. One is reminded of Gandhiji’s dictum that “an uncontrolled pen serves but to destroy”.

In our country today, media represents a sector of economy that is the envy of others because of the extremely buoyant growth rates witnessed over the last two decades, in an environment characterised by minimal or no regulation.

In an address at the Indore Press Club earlier this year, I had mentioned that while economic deregulation has been the dominant trend of the recent past, it is premised on a dynamic market place with a system of independent regulation, especially competition regulation, to prevent cartelisation, abusive behaviour by dominant firms and corporate transactions that derail the competitive processes in the market.

Two questions arise here. In the first place, who will step in to address the gap when the government, the polity, the market and the industry are unable to provide for full-spectrum systemic regulation that protects consumer welfare and citizen interest?

Secondly, can the constitutional safeguards on freedom of speech be used to evade regulation of the commercial persona of media corporates and groups? Where does public interest end and private interest begin?

The experience of other countries shows us the way. The ongoing national debate on the subject should involve all stakeholders leading perhaps to the publication of a White Paper. This should lead to further consultations and evolution of a broad national consensus so that appropriate frameworks can be put in place combining voluntary initiative, executive regulation and legislative action, as appropriate.

Such an effort can cover issues of multiple-ownership and cross-ownership, content and diversity, and a cogent national communications policy that covers print, radio, television, cable, DTH platforms, video and film industry, internet and mobile telephony, and electro-magnetic spectrum.

Our democracy is poorer without active media watch groups engaged in objective analyses of the media, discerning prejudices and latent biases, and subjecting the media to a dose of their own medicine. For an industry that has over fifty thousand newspapers and hundreds of television channels, systematic media criticism is non-existent in India. This should be remedied and I hope your deliberations would address this important aspect.

A related matter pertains to the recent controversy over ‘paid news’. It has been debated extensively in the Press Council and other fora, including Parliament. It is a matter of some satisfaction that the ‘culture of silence’ on the subject is being replaced with an attempt to grapple with this malaise at multiple levels.

Finally, I venture to hope that your debate would also focus on the erosion of the institution of the editor in our media organisations. When media space is treated as real estate or as airline seats for purpose of revenue maximisation, and when media products are sold as jeans or soaps for marketing purposes, editors end up giving way to marketing departments.

I would like to conclude by saying that all stakeholders – the government, the media organisations and the industry, civil society, advertisers and sponsors, and the audience and readership of the media – must address the various concerns regarding the profession and work towards securing and defending the public good.

I thank the Press Council and Justice Katju for inviting me to the National Press Day Celebration. I wish you all success in your deliberations”.
